You’re going to end up exactly where you want to be…even without a plan! Think about it, somewhere in your future you’ll be somewhere doing something. Now the real question is this: do you want to leave the future to chance or do you want to shape and influence your future to your making?

Fulfilling your dreams of the future is solely dependent on the actions you take today. If you become proactive in the shaping of your own future you can start by molding today’s actions to attain the shape you want for your future.

There cannot be any more powerful action you can take than planning for your future. Whatever your dream, whatever your long-range goal it‘s fulfillment is dependent on what you start doing today.

The most important tool you have for planning your future is your current situation. This process begins with recognizing these four factors:

  1. The only thing you can do about the past is to learn from it, you can’t change it. All too often we human beings spend much too much time reliving our past. “If I had just…” becomes the defining character of our future. This living in the past gets you nowhere. You can’t do one single thing to change what has happened. Let it go…learn from it so you don’t repeat the mistakes of the past but most importantly, get over it.
  2. As with the past you can’t predict the future you can only plan for it. How much time do you waste day dreaming about what you’d like to happen? How you’d like to see your life being played out? Dreaming about your future without acting on it is a total waste of your time. The only way you can translate your future into what you want it to be is by planning for it today.
  3. That leaves you with the present which is the only place you can have any direct influence over. This is important. Why? Because it is only in the here and now that you can really effect any change at all. Whatever you do right now will determine what the next few moments will turn out to be. When you multiply those next moments over and over you’ll come to recognize that it is on the backs of these moments that your future is built.
  4. Take the moment and use it to envision what you want for your future, and then act on the steps you need to take write out a plan for your future. Where do you see yourself in five years? What do you need to do to attain that five year plan? Write down what you will need to accomplish in the next six months, one year, two years, etc. to get to your eventual goal?

Your future is directly linked to the vision you have of it in this moment.

As Henry Ford said  “Obstacles are those frightful things you see when you take your eyes off your goal.”
